While insulated water bottles are often made out of stainless steel, not all stainless steel is created equal. There are several types of stainless steel, each uniquely suited to specific needs. Knowing the differences between these steel types can help us better understand which one is most suitable for our insulated water bottle.
The two most commonly used steels are called 304 and 316 stainless steel. 304 is an 18/8 austenitic stainless steel, meaning it contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel. This steel is best used in situations where corrosion resistance is still a priority and greater strength is not essential. This type of stainless steel is great for general purpose use but not ideal for an insulated water bottle.
The better option for an insulated water bottle is 316 stainless steel. 316 is a molybdenum-alloyed austenitic stainless steel with a slightly higher nickel content (around 10%). This special alloy improves the corrosion resistance of the steel compared to 304, making it more suitable for environments where corrosion may be an issue. Furthermore, this type of stainless steel is much more resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion than other types of stainless steel.
Regardless of which steel you choose, both 304 and 316 stainless steels are known for their quality and durability. Choosing the right steel for your insulated water bottle will give it the strength to last for many years. So when looking for the perfect insulated water bottle, make sure to find one made from either 304 or 316 stainless steel.
